Sustainable ingredients (ie palm):

We are very aware of the ingredients we use in our products and select them carefully. All our ingredients must fit three criteria before we consider using them;

  • Healthy & safe to use
  • Cruelty free
  • Sustainably produced.

The latter means we go to great lengths to ensure the ingredients we use don’t deplete the environment they are grown in, thereby ensuring sustainability.

Palm oil is currently in the media as the biggest ingredient to avoid due to the havoc it is wreaking on the environment in Indonesia & Malaysia. This is certainly true, although the issue isn’t totally cut and dried. Palm is the most efficient oil on the planet, requiring ¼ of the land and water to produce the same amount of coconut oil. Palm demand is growing and as a result deforestation, fires and habitat loss is occurring at an unprecedented level.

The RSPO (Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil) aims to solve this problem, but as yet, the process isn’t perfect. Palm production is vital for the local communities so a boycott harms them unnecessarily, but until the certifications are airtight, we won’t use palm in any form.

If we change this stance, we will be working directly with a small producer, as we do our cocoa butter & coconut oil, to ensure they are paid a fair price and that the environment is protected, thereby ensuring sustainability.

All our other ingredients must be renewable, non-petroleum sourced and naturally derived with minimal chemical processing.

Compostable packaging & In-Shower Containers:

All our packaging is plastic free and compostable with no chemical coatings. This means all our boxes and labels will degrade in both the landfill or compost bin. You can also recycle them, though we’d prefer you to compost. To try it- bury them in your garden and watch them disappear over a few months.

The stock they are made of is also sourced from PEFC certified forests, ensuring the forests are logged without significantly impacting the surrounding environment, again ensuring sustainability.

The complete package(ing)

No plastic, no laminate, no chlorine
Our packaging goes to the very heart of what Ethique stands for. Our solid bars are designed to do away with water, and with it, the plastic bottles.

But just swapping out plastic for paper isn’t good enough – paper production can come with a raft of other environmental concerns too. When designing our packaging, we took all those factors into account, to make it as earth-friendly as possible:

No landfills needed
Our packaging, shipping boxes and padding are free from laminates and plastic (including our packing tape), which means they can go straight into the home compost and will disappear in a matter of months.

Made in NZ from renewable forests
No rainforests were harmed in the making of these boxes. They’re made in NZ from PEFC-certified paper stock from sustainably sourced forestry.

Chlorine and acid free
It takes water to make paper, so when the wastewater gets pumped out, we want to make sure it’s as clean as possible. Even trace chlorine in water can pollute waterways and make fish sick.

Plastic-free in-shower storage containers
You heard that right. We’ve stuck to our no-landfill guns, even when it came to creating something you’ll keep for a long time.
While there are lots of ways to store our bars, our in-shower containers are specially designed for the purpose. We hope you never throw them away, but if you do, they can go straight into your compost – they’re made with those renewable superstars, bamboo and corn

When you #giveupthebottle and move into solid products you are not only giving up plastic, but also saving water.

So far we have prevented over 4.3 million bottles, jars & tubes from being made and disposed of. By 2025, we aim to have hit 50 million. Join us. #giveupthebottle.

Comfortable & sustainable

3 ply for
extra softness

  • Biodegradable
  • Super soft and strong
  • 300 sheets per roll

Bamboo can grow 3ft in just 24 hours…

In fact – it’s the fastest growing plant on the planet, it can be harvested once a year and doesn’t need to be replanted.

It uses 30% less water than hardwood trees…

Plus it gives out 35% more oxygen than trees, meaning an acre of bamboo can fix approximately 25 metric tons of atmospheric CO2 per year.

Soft and Strong

Bamboo fibers make a much softer paper product than many made from recycled paper and wood fiber.

Also, because of its very unique composition, bamboo is naturally designed for strength. In fact, it has a higher tensile strength than many alloys of steel!

1 for 1

2.4 billion people are forced to defecate outside — meaning lost dignity, deadly pathogens, contaminated water, and loss of life.

Our mission is clear. For every roll you buy, we donate a single-use biodegradable toilet to someone in need.

Our toilets neutralize bacteria so waste can be turned into valuable fertilizer. Starting in Kenya, people now have a healthier, safer option.
